Learning from Family and Friends Who Helped with Dementia Care

How do former dementia caregivers meet their basic psychological needs?

Bereaved Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (AD/ADRD) caregivers have a common set of needs that influence clinical and subclinical outcomes. However, subgroups may meet those needs in different ways, based on evidence from self-determination theory and observations of bereaved AD/ADRD caregivers.

Fulfilling the Needs of Black Bereaved Dementia Caregivers

What needs exist among Black bereaved dementia caregivers?

This project explores the needs of Black bereaved dementia caregivers in the Twin Cities of Minnesota. Taking an asset-based approach and leveraging significant community ties, this collaborative project qualitatively assesses what needs may exist among Black bereaved dementia caregivers in the Twin Cities and what services exist to meet those needs. If unmet needs exist, a promising former dementia caregiver support group model will be shared with community leaders to determine whether that is a model they find promising for their own communities. If they do find promise in the model, we will discuss with those community leaders what adaptations might be needed to make that model best fit with the needs of Black bereaved dementia caregivers in their communities.
